Red Dead Redemption 2 is an action-adventure game which was developed and published by Rockstar Games in 2018. The game is the third volume after the Red Dead series and Red Dead Redemption in 2010. The story is set in a fictional world of the United States in 1899 and it follows the death of Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang which deals with the decline of the Wild West while surviving against government forces, rival gangs, and other challenges. The game is played in first and third person perspectives, and the player is free to roam in the game world. Some of the elements in the game are shootouts, robberies, hunting, horseback riding etc.

The game has been developed in more than eight years and it is one of the most expensive video games ever made. The game is a Western-themed action-adventure game that is played from a first or third person perspective, the game features an environment of the United States in the year 1899. It allows single-player and online multiplayer components.

Red Dead Redemption 2, the player controls a character named Arthur Morgan who is a member of the Van der Linde gang, he has to complete missions to progress the story. In the epilogue, the player controls Red Dead Redemption protagonist, John Marston. Players can freely roam in the game world and can also interact with other people in the game. They may engage in battles with enemies using firearms, bow and arrow, throwables, or explosives. The player can swim while playing as Arthur but not as John.

Red Dead Redemption 2 world features different landscapes with travelers, bandits, and wildlife. Horses are the main mode of transportation, of various breeds. The player can steal horses from others and can train them.

The player acquires advantages while they ride a horse. Stagecoaches and trains are used to travel, the player can hijack a train or stagecoach by threatening the driver. The player may take part in random events in the world, including ambushes, crimes, public executions, and animal attacks. They may contest side activities, including tasks with companions and strangers, dueling, bounty hunting and searching for collectibles. Hunting animals in the game provides food, income, and materials for crafting items. The choice of weapon affects the quality and value of meat, and the player can skin the animal or carry the dead body, which will rot over time.

Some moments give the player the option to accept or decline additional missions and change the plot around their choices. They can choose to be friendly or insulting with the non-playing characters. If they kill a non-playing character, they can loot their corpse. The Honor system measures the player’s actions like helping strangers, following the law, and sparing opponents in a duel and deeds such as theft and harming innocents.

There are health and stamina bars as well as cores, which affect the rate at which their health and stamina regenerate. Freezing or overheating can decrease cores which can be prevented by wearing weather-appropriate clothing. Eating and sleeping regenerate cores. Weapons consist of pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, bows, arrows, explosives, lassos, mounted guns etc. The Dead Eye system upgrades gradually and grants abilities such as targeting lethal points.

When the player commits a crime, witnesses alert the law and the player can stop them to avoid repercussions. Law enforcers investigate once alerted and when the player is caught, an incentive is set on their head, as they commit more crimes, their incentive grows higher. If the player runs away from the law, bounty hunters track them down.

When the player is caught by police, the player can surrender if they are unarmed and on foot. They can remove their incentive by paying it off or spending time in jail.
